11: SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES

In Lubumbashi, a city in the DRC, getting around and arriving at one's destination on time has become a headache because the road traffic situation in the main thoroughfares of the city of Lubumbashi is very embarrassing.

My name is Christophe KABULO, I live in Lubumbashi.

Usually during the day when I ride the bus to work or to another part of the city, I find that the bus moves smoothly because there are few vehicles on the road. And since the traffic is smooth, I also arrive at the destination on time.

Still during the day some stretches are almost empty, without vehicles and this allows us to cross the road easily.

But for a while now, in the evening hours, especially between 4:30 and 8:00 p.m. when I go home, I find myself in traffic jams, and often it's at the crossroads and some of the main thoroughfares.

And due to traffic jams, I take double or even triple the normal time.

Sometimes I even stay in the vehicle for more than an hour because there are so many vehicles in the queue. As a road user, I see that traffic jams have a negative impact on the activities of us, the inhabitants of Lubumbashi.

Among these consequences I can mention:

  • The gathering of people at bus stops,
  • The long wait for buses at the stop,
  • The late return home for people whose activities extend into the evening,

After having analysed the traffic situation in Lubumbashi very thoroughly, I understand that the recurrent traffic jams are due to

The demographic growth,
And to the fact that a large part of the population is now able to afford a vehicle
So to reduce traffic jams in the main thoroughfares at peak hours, I propose to the authorities to reorganise the city by erecting secondary roads and also by providing spaces for the circulation of bicycles and bicycles.
