Rwanda

Advocacy on public policies.

As I have been active in Rwandan civil society organizations for a long time,  I know that the law allows organizations to protect person´s rights by giving proposals on laws and national policies.

“Kitchen Gardens” are a solution to malnutrition in Rwanda

Malnutrition is a serious problem in Rwanda.  Thirty-eight per cent of Rwandans suffer from malnutrition.

It’s essentially mothers and their young of 5 years or less who are the most malnourished. The state has released the necessary funds to eradicate the problem.

The NGO for which I work has a program to install a Kitchen Garden in each beneficiary’s household.

Intercultural exchange as a means to better understand our world

The Earth is a planet with many traditions and natural resources. An intercultural exchange can help us understand our world better.

In February 2018, an exchange day was organised between pupils of Kiruhura Secondary School in Rwanda and Belgian pupils of the College of Saint Quirin in Huy.

My contributions to the development (original text in Kinyrwanda)

My name is Claudine AHISHAKIYE. I am from the district of Huye, in SIMBI (Rwanda). I am married and I have 4 children.

I was very poor and I survived by doing manual labor. I had family land plots, but they were not being exploited. As soon as I joined the project, I received several trainings on goat and rabbit breeding, and agriculture. These trainings provided me with an excellent good orientation.

Field schools in Rwanda

As an agriculturist and worker for APROJUMAP, I am aware of the extreme poverty of some rural families.

That is why I organize field schools, to teach the best agricultural techniques for the production of corn. It has been observed that traditional practices do not produce enough corn to cover the food needs of the poorest families.

Increase production on small farms

Everyone is aware that there is insufficient land and livestock in several rural households in Huye.

As a result, poverty is worsened by food shortages. Thanks to the project, I was able to develop my small plot by installing woodland shrubs such as Calliandra and Sesbania on the slopes of the anti-erosion ditches. I also use forage shrubs such as Pennisetum and Setaria.

A balanced diet

As a social worker for APROJUMAP (Association pour la PROmotion des JUMelages et de l'Amitié entre les Peuples), I work with vulnerable families in the district of Huye, Rwanda. I have noticed that there is a problem of malnutrition.

Malnutrition comes in the form of Kwashiorkor, characterized by the presence of swelling all over the body, and marasmus, characterized by extreme thinness, especially among children under the age of 5.

Some parents of poor families in rural areas fail to provide sufficient food for their children.

Advancements made thanks to cooperative action (original text in Kinyarwanda)

My name is Christine Mukamurigo and I live in the village of Nyakagezi in the Huye district in Rwanda.

I lived in solitude, in extreme poverty, without a home, with infertile land and no agricultural tools, with chronic famine and a family plagued by disease.
