The story of a Successful Pineapple Grower

Her name is Rosalina Malubay, one of the pineapple growers from Baranggay Mabilo II. Before, she was among the poorest family with primary source of income focuses on agriculture. But when she was awarded by the Agrarian Reform Program with a 2.2 hectares, things started to change.

Biodiversity in Central Cebu Protected Landscape.

I’m Gab, a budding biologist and environmental scientist. Before I worked in a non-governmental organization, I’ve read about reports from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources about Central Cebu Protected Landscape (CCPL). I was impressed of how they came up with these reports on the conservation status in the protected landscape.

Organic farming as a profitable business in the Philippines.

Mr. Edgardo Oque’s Organic Farming Enterprise Edgardo Oque is a 45-year old farmer with 7 children. Fifteen years ago, he engaged in farming using chemical fertilizer good for home consumption. The family had low income due to the high cost of farming. So his wife worked abroad to contribute to the growing needs of the family. Working outside is not easy.

Zero hunger is UNESCO's top 2 Sustainable Goal. How come many FARMERS, who provide food security to the world, end up hungry themselves and victims of human rights abuses? Such a paradox is the deadly struggle of the Kidapawan farmers in March, 2016 in my homeland Philippines.

Our tropical location makes us most vulnerable to climate hazards. For five months since November 2015, El Nino had caused stifling draught.

Seaweed farming

Kelp farming is the cultivation of seaweed in an authorized, specified area. An effort is made to cultivate the largest amount of seaweed possible. Seaweed farming has been developed as an alternative to improve economic conditions and to reduce pressure and over-exploitation on other resources. Seaweed farms are generally located in shallow and constantly warm waters.

Empowering Women.

Traditionally, rural women in the Philippines do all the household related chores. The scope of their function includes cooking, cleaning, taking care of the children, washing clothes, repairs, budgeting and helping in the farm. Most of the time, they can no longer attend to their personal needs. Facts: more than half of the world’s population are women; but women are the less heard and the less recognized, especially in the rural communities.

Coal plants are not developing the Philippines.

In the village Libertad, Kauswagan, a small town in Lanao del Norte, a 540 megawatt Coal Fired Power Plant is being built. Some government officials think that this is the solution for the power crisis and bring more jobs to the poor communities in the country.
