Ecocide in the Sayaxché Municipality
On 29 April 2015, hundreds of dead fish of different sizes appeared in the majestic Río La Pasión due to water contamination caused by chemical substances that had reached the river. It began from the village of Arroyo San Martín to Aldea Canaán and covered a stretch of more than 105 km along the river. This event, called and cataloged as Ecocide against humanity, affected more than 10 species of fish, as well as amphibians, reptiles, and birds. The African Palm company Repsa is accused of causing the damage.
